Plum fruit seedlings are not complicated to protect, but they are more sensitive than cherries and apricots due to the long ripening period, ie. later fruit harvests.
The biggest problem with plums are insects that bite and cause the fruit to fall and worm, then leaf diseases as well as fruit rot to which they are sensitive. Currently, the biggest problem is the plum hinge virus, which is incurable and we should take care when planting that we have acquired virus-free planting material. “Plum hinge” is the main reason why many old, resistant, quality varieties have stopped being grown (Valjevka, Požegača …). The “plum hinge” virus is recognized by the yellow lines on the leaf and by the premature fall of the fruit, but one should be able not to confuse these symptoms with the lack of some nutrition as far as leaves are concerned, as well as insect attack as far as falling fruits are concerned.
In smaller plantations of a few trees, treatments 1, 2, 3, (if necessary, 5) and 6 must be done, while in larger professional plantations, especially densely planted, all treatments should be done.
1. Before the movement of vegetation (February-March) – Winter protection (copper + oil)
2. Flowering – Drying of twigs (Monilia laxa)
3. Overblown – Protection in overblown
4. In intensive orchards, when the fruit is growing, the size of a pea – an insecticide
5. The beginning of ripening, the fruit starts with a change of color to blue – insecticide
6. When the fruit is completely blue – against fruit rot
Monitor the appearance of lice and react if necessary – Plant lice
7. When 75% of the leaves fall – Autumn blue copper spray
